- Title
ZUR FUNKTION DER PROPHETENKAMMER IM KÖLNER RATHAUS.
- Authors
Plassmann, Von Max
- Abstract
The article examines the symbolic significance of the so-called Chamber of the Prophets, a room with eight medieval sculptures depicting the Biblical prophets in the city hall of Cologne, Germany, in the context of the history and politics of Cologne in the 14th and 15th centuries. The author highlights the inscriptions that accompany the sculptures and posits that they emphasized central tenets of city governance and constitutional principles, particularly government for the common good. He speculates that the chamber was used as a secret meeting room but that the prophets symbolically allowed the public to be present even at such clandestine interactions between political leaders.
