- Abstract
The article discusses fluctuating prices of paintings in the auction markets of the Austrian Netherlands during the period of 1739 to 1794. At this time came the arrival of specialized art auctions, where paintings were increasingly sold at separate public sales in semi-specialized salesrooms. These art works were marketed through newspaper advertisements and catalogs. The prices of paintings collapsed at the end of the century due to an abundant supply but a lack of local demand, according to the author.
