- Authors
Davis, Joseph
- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the history of the 16th-century Czech Jewish scholar Judah Loew ben Bezalel, also known as "the Maharal." Introductory details are given highlighting the figure's mythical association with the legend of the Golem of Prague and questions are raised seeking to uncover the historical reception and views on the scholar before the circulation of the 19th-century tale. The developments of legends regarding the Maharal and the Golem are then traced and analyzed from the 16th- to 18th-centuries.
