- Abstract
Brief Background: The aim of the study is to evaluate oral manifestations and radiographic changes among patients, analyze the relation of maxilla to mandible and to evaluate the dental development of patients compared with the control group. Materials and Methods: The study included 31 diagnosed cases of thalassaemia, 14 male and 17 female, visiting the Paediatrics department of Maharana Bhupal Government Hospital, Udaipur, Rajasthan, for blood transfusion. 11 participants were also selected for control group. Panoramic and lateral cephalogram radiographs were taken to record and compare the skeletal changes. To analyze the relation of maxilla to mandible Steiner's cephalometric analysis was performed. Results: General examination revealed that moderate build, anaemia, dry skin, organomegaly, frontal bossing, depressed nasal bridge and joint pain were associated with this disease. Oral manifestations found pallor of mucosa and depapilation of tongue to be the most significant findings. Malaligned teeth were significant, angular chelitis and enamel hypoplasia were seen in a few cases. Panoramic radiograph showed highly significant values for thinning of the cortex, and not visualizing the inferior mandibular canal, whereas spiked roots were less significant in our study. Lateral cephalogram showed a high significance of thickening of the calvarium, altered pituitary fossa and fine granular pattern. Cephalometric analysis stated that these patients had a class II skeletal base with a vertical growth pattern. Summary and Conclusions: Even on therapeutic modalities and blood transfusion they express with facial deformity. Highly significant features should be mentioned in the literature and for significant and less significant features further longitudinal studies are required.
