- Abstract
The article discusses the Supreme Court of Iowa case Varnum v. Brien which deals with the constitutionality of a state statute which restricts civil marriage to a union between one man and one woman, and it also addresses a potential violation of the equal protection provision in both the Iowa Constitution and the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The issue of same-sex marriage in several of the U.S. states is examined, including Hawaii, California, and Iowa.
