THE FRENCH-CANADIANS IN NEW ENGLAND.
- Abstract
The article discusses French-Canadian immigrants living in New England. The author gives statistics regarding the number of French-Canadians in New England and comments on their classification as Protestant or Roman Catholic and as temporary and permanent residents or migrants. He comments on Canadian farmers who settle in New England to raise money to pay their mortgages and suggests that children of these farmers often settle in New England permanently. The migration of parishes and religious societies to New England from Quebec is noted. The author comments on the settlement of Canada by Breton and Norman colonists from France and on traces of Indian ancestry in French Canadians. The feudal nature of the Canadian government under French and British rule is discussed.
