- Abstract
The article "20 Years of EU Enlargement: Employees from EU Accession Countries in Germany" reports on the employment of workers from EU accession countries in Germany. Currently, around 820,000 employees from the first round of EU accession countries (2004) are working in Germany, which corresponds to 2.4% of all employees. However, this employment has not led to displacement of German workers, as employees from the Central and Eastern European accession countries are mainly working in sectors that are less attractive to domestic workers. The employment of individuals from the accession countries has significantly increased since 2010, with Poland accounting for the largest share. Other countries, on the other hand, are poorly represented. The main reason for migration to Germany is the lower wage level in the accession countries compared to Germany. Most employees from the accession countries work in the fields of transportation and logistics, temporary work, construction, and agriculture. It is noted that employees from the accession countries often perform physically demanding tasks that require only low qualifications. Nevertheless, they contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of German production. However, it is pointed out that they can only make a small contribution to meeting the increasing demand for skilled workers.
