- Abstract
This study examined the relationships among the dimensions of perfectionism and perfectionistic self-presentation, the public stigma of help-seeking, self-stigma of help-seeking, attitudes towards help-seeking, previous experience of receiving help and the intention to seek psychological help. This study also examined how perfectionism, perfectionistic self-presentation, and both types of stigma and attitudes predict the intention to seek help. Participating in the study were 255 adults (120 men and 135 women), aged 25 to 54 years (M = 41.1, SD = 8.2). Six scales were used to collect data: the Big Three Perfectionism Scale (Smith et al., 2016), Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale (Hewitt et al., 2003), Perceptions of Stigmatization by Others for Seeking Help Scale (Vogel et al., 2009), Self-Stigma of Seeking-Help Scale (Vogel et al., 2006), Mental Help-Seeking Attitudes Scale (Hammer et al., 2018), and Mental Help-Seeking Intention Scale (Hammer & Spiker, 2018). The results showed a positive relationship between public stigma, self-stigma, and perfectionism, a negative relationship between stigma and intention to seek help, and a positive relationship between attitudes, previous experience of receiving help, and intention. The ratings of self-stigma, attitudes, and previous experience of help significantly predicted the intention to seek help. Attitudes mediated the relationship between self-stigma and intention. The results of this study can be utilized in planning prevention activities to encourage people to seek psychological help.
