The article discusses the trend of producing tomatoes with high yield and long shelf-life but with reduced flavour and nutrient content. Topics discussed include use of a combination of genetic and chemical analysis to produce tasty tomatoes as per Harry Klee of the horticultural sciences department at the University of Florida, growth in tomato crop yields in the U.S. since 1970 as per the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and complexity of tomato flavour.
