- Abstract
This study focuses on The Snow of the Admiral (Álvaro Mutis), considered one of the most important travel novels in Latin Ame rican literature. The story revolves around Maqroll el Gaviero (central character) who must decide between two irreconcilable destinies: stay with Flor Estévez (his ideal and idealized love) or go after the sawmills. The main objective is to analyze the protagonist (Maqroll) integrating literary criticism and philosophical perspective to show that existentialism predominates in his actions. Specifically, a minimal narratological scheme is applied (contextualization of the work, actions and intentions of the main character and type of narrator, for example) and a philosophical approach is made, from existentialism, to characterize Maqroll based on his most relevant actions. In this way, his trajectory is approached from a transdisciplinary approach. In short, it is shown that he acts in accordance with the postulates of existentialism (existence-freedom-choice-anguish), rather than with those of determinism (contrary, for example, to Arturo Cova in La vorágine, character who acts because external situations force him and not because there is a presence of will). The analysis of the text allows us to propose the thesis that The Gaviero is presented as a human being who decides freely (acts with full will) and is anguished by the implications of his actions. In this way, his actions are analyzed from a transdisciplinary approach. In short, it is shown that Maqroll acts in accordance with the postulates of existentialism (existence-freedom-choice-anguish), rather than with those of determinism (like the character of Arturo Cova in La vorágine who acts driven by situations and not voluntarily).
