Examines the generally hostile response by many white people to the arrival of informal settlements and vagrants who are portrayed as a threat to the formal neighborhood in post-apartheid South Africa. Examination of the role of race and racism as a motivating force in segregation; Argument that although racial prejudice could be the basis for some exclusionary discourse, the dominant underlying cause of responses by whites to groups such as informal settlements.
