- Abstract
This paper recognizes that improving student preparation for employment in the high technology workforce of this century and beyond will necessitate a concerted and dedicated effort among educators focused on creating engineers and technologists ready to embrace a workforce environment engaged in preparing for a greener, more sustainable future. Our model of beginning with a certificate program developed by three faculty members constitutes baby steps towards an overall goal of developing full-fledged degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This will ease the strain on thin budgets and allow movement towards this type of engineering education in the future. We argue that sustainability and green initiatives should move beyond the recycling level at campuses across the United States and realize that sustainability should be integrated into every discipline, especially engineering technology and engineering disciplines, so that the graduates of the future will display confidence and skills to embrace this new technological focus.
