An essay is presented in which the author discusses her experiences during a trip to Texas in 1946. She discusses the significance of the trip in her family's life, her mother's mental illness, and meeting her stepmother. According to the author, her father was transferred to the U.S. military base at Ft. Hood, Texas. She discusses learning about Texas, her impressions of the Texas landscape, and her life in Gatesville, Texas.
