- Abstract
The article discusses the return of a Makonde Mask from Switzerland to the United Republic of Tanzania following its 1984 theft from the National Museum of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and its discovery at the Barbier-Mueller Museum in Geneva, Switzerland in 1990. The author describes the Barbier-Mueller Museum's negotiations for the return of the object. Topics addressed include due diligence inquiry of the mask's provenance upon acquisition by the Barbier-Mueller Museum, ownership of the mask, and the restitution of African cultural objects through efforts from the International Council of Museums and UNESCO.
