- Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), one of the biggest puzzles in medicine. A number of drugs and therapies have been developed that affect the symptoms or change the severity and frequency of the seizures. Multiple sclerosis is of great social and economic importance to the world, due to the great invasion at early age. It affects the "young adults" in their creatively active period - between 10 and 50 years of age. It is known that multiple sclerosis affects both sexes differently. Females suffer from this condition twice as more than males. The most common symptom, reported by patients is chronic fatigue. Most commonly, ina mature individuals, depression I associated with chronic fatigue. This affects a wider range of the social needs and daily life. There are number of studies showing that hormonal differences between the genders are at the root of the asymmetrical spread of the disease. The purpose of this analysis is to see how men and women react to a tested physiotherapeutic program. Methods: The study took place in Sofia, Bulgaria with 40 participants – 18 men and 22 women – divided in two groups, clinically diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis with duration over 5 years and more than 4 crises. The survey was conducted on the territory of Sofia - NSA "Vasil Levski", in the period from 01.09.2013 to 30.10.2015. Each person started with 10 weeks of physiotherapy, after which continued with the 16 sessions of hippotherapy. The therapeutic program we have prepared and tested includes the following: Exercise with a large therapeutic ball (fitball); proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF); myofascial techniques (MFT); autogenous training (AT); hippo therapy (HT). Three tests were taken: at the beginning, in the middle and after the last class. Results: Due to the effect of the selected exercises and methods both strengthening and relaxing at the same time, male patients had significant progress after the whole program. While the female patients showed positive results after the second testing and kept the progress. Conclusions: Both sexes react differently to the tested program, but in a positive way. It can be seen thet the two genders require different time to show results recording to the tested program. Women may need less time to achieve the goal, while men may needed a period of consolidation. The decrease of the results in this study also indicates the reduction of the HF in both males and females. This is due to the relaxing and tonic effect of the selected elements of the program. They also have positive psycho-emotional effect. Apart from what has been mentioned so far, the stimulating effect on the muscle activity, as well as improving coordination and balance, cannot be neglected. All this is achieved in a unique way without overloading the body. At the end - long term programs show positive effect over the patients with multiple sclerosis in both genders.
