- Abstract
On June 13th, 1983, Louis-Edmond Hamelin was nearing the end of his term as President at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (Uqtr) when he gave this talk marking the University’s acquisition of the Robert-Lionel Séguin collection. His speech was much more than simply an official address. It revealed itself to be a manifesto in favour of an interdisciplinary approach to “Québec Studies”. Thanks to its tremendous documentary value, the Séguin collection, Québec’s largest repository of material culture, has provided us with a profound understanding of Francophone culture spanning three centuries. The presentation included scholarly development plans for the monumental collection, encompassing cataloguing, undergraduate teaching, museum pedagogy, research and further study, as well as collaboration with other institutions. The text of the address is presented here in context, along with notes that highlight its original and innovative approach.
