- Title
UNION ORGANIZING IN CHINA: STILL A MONOLITHIC LABOR MOVEMENT?
- Abstract
The article examines variation within the All China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) in terms of local union organizing strategies. While the ACFTU has historically been viewed as a monolithic organization, the author urges that between 2005 and 2007 Chinese trade unions shed some of their uniformity. This determination was reached via interviews with regional union officials, field research, grassroots union cadres, and discussions with employers and managers in the nation. The paper posits three patterns of union organization: the traditional ACFTU pattern, the industry-based bargaining pattern, and the union association pattern.
