- Abstract
This article offers a synthesis of the authorís doctoral thesis: "Industrial paternalism and the development of capitalism in Guadalajara: the case of the El León cement plant (1900- 1930)". Supervised by Juan José Castillo, this thesis was defended in the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in February 2004. In it, the author traces the specific process whereby a group of peasants from the Alcarria region of Spain were turned into factory workers over the course of two generations (1900- 1930) ,focusing on the case of the industrial colony constructed around the El León de Matillas cement factory in the early 20th century. In this way, this thesis examines the implications of a product and type of production process that were to be of enormous importance in the definitive transformation of Spanish traditional social structure.
