- Abstract
The article presents Dutch letters translated into English concerning a request by Baptist John Smyth for recognition and admittance in the Mennonite congregation in Amsterdam, the Netherlands known as "the English affair." The texts of several letters in the correspondence between religious leaders John Smyth and Thomas Helwys are included, describing the relations between the Baptist and Mennonite sects in the 17th-century.
