- Abstract
Purpose: Individuals diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) are restricted in body and neck movements due to spinal involvement. The purpose of this study is to examine whether these limitations affect the individual's perception of health. Methods: 152 AS patients were included in the study. Demographic data were obtained. Mobility evaluations were assessed by the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Mobility Index (BASMI). Health perceptions were assessed by the Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life Scale (ASQOL) and the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Global Index (BAS-G). The relationship between the data was analyzed by Spearman Correlation Test. Results: 51.3% of the patients were female. The mean age and body mass indexes were 36.74 ± 11.27 and 25.12 ± 3.76, respectively (Table 1). BASMI scores showed a low and positive relationship with BAS-G and ASQOL (respectively r=0.187, p<0,05; r=0.251, p<0,01) (Table2). BAS-G and ASQOL showed a moderate positive correlation (r=0.593, p<0,01)(Table2). Conclusion: It was determined that the health perceptions of AS individuals were not affected by spinal mobility. Being able to use the extremities and being active in daily life can be the reason of this result. It is concluded that when the patient's perception of health declines, the reasons of this condition should be carefully assessed.
