- Abstract
Background: Awareness of cardiac amyloidosis (CA) as a possible cause of heart failure is improving; however, it is still a relatively novel entity to many clinical nurses. Purpose: The aim of this paper is for cardiovascular nurses to apply their evidence-based knowledge of CA to clinical nursing practice, using a case study approach. Methods: This case study exemplar describes a hypothetical patient's journey, within a Canadian context, from his initial presentation to the emergency department, the focused assessment, and relevant diagnostic tests, to a diagnosis of CA. In addition, we highlight his initial treatment, as well as his referral to a heart failure clinic and the development of a coordinated plan for a multidisciplinary approach to the ongoing care for this patient and his family. Conclusion: This case study application of evidence-based knowledge to cardiovascular nursing practice will ideally have a positive impact on the care provided to CA patients and their families.
