- Title
Chronic Health Problems and the Risk of Eating Disorders.
- Abstract
Having a chronic health condition can increase the risk of developing an eating disorder, especially among young patients. Adolescents with chronic health conditions are more likely to try to lose weight and engage in unhealthy weight control behaviors. These individuals may have poorer body image and increased body dissatisfaction due to their physical appearance being altered by their condition or treatments. Patients who require dietary treatment are at even higher risk, as are those with certain chronic conditions such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease. It is important for healthcare professionals to detect eating disorders in patients with chronic illnesses and intervene early. Screening questionnaires and partnering with other adults in the patient's life can help with early detection. It is also crucial to encourage a healthy relationship with food and minimize weight stigma.
