- Title
A HISTORY LESSON FROM OCTOBER OF '87.
- Authors
R. C.
- Abstract
The article presents the perspective of State University of New York finance professor Edward F. Renshaw on lessons that should be reinforced by the stock market crash of October, 1987. Since World War II, in 8 of the 9 times that the Standard & Poor's (S&P's) composite stock price index fell at least 20%, it was preceded by a period during which growth in the price level outstripped that of the money supply. Whenever the yield on the S&P index goes below 3.1%, history shows stocks are at risk for a significant decline. Finally, substantial stock market declines invariably present good investment opportunities.
