- Abstract
The article discusses the case of a 41-year-old African American man who has a history of difficulty adhering to medical regimens to control hypertension. The man's medical history, trouble with side effects from various medications, and details of his physical examination are provided. The factors related to hypertension affecting treatment such as ethnicity, health system, drug interactions as well as the patients' attitude and the patient-physician relationship are assessed. The treating physician raises questions related to the patient's continued lack of adherence to recommended treatment despite physical side effects. It is questioned whether the efficacy and adverse effects of hypertension treatment differs by race.
