Egypt's Labor Pains.
- Authors
PAUL, ARI
- Abstract
The article discusses trade and labor unions in Egypt following the revolution of 2011 and the end of the regime run by former president Hosni Mubarak. The author argues that independent trade unions are not supported by Egypt's military government, looking at the arrest of independent teachers union members Hamala Korany and Atef Al-Gazar, the use of ammunition against striking workers at the Suez Canal, and accusations of assault during a strike at a textile company. The author looks at Kamal Abbas, the coordinator of the Center for Trade Unions and Worker Services, the Egyptian Trade Union Federation, and teacher's unions.
