- Abstract
The crises of recent years, especially the Covid-19 pandemic, created new challenges for measuring the inflation rate. This also affected the package holiday product group. For many travel packages offered in 2020 and 2021, for example, it was unclear whether consumers actually booked them and travelled despite travel warnings issued by the Federal Foreign Office. Since the beginning of 2023, the Federal Statistical Office's price index for package holidays has been based on transaction data, that is, on actual booking information instead of data on offered travel packages. The new data source covers a substantial part of the German package holiday market. Using this data source, it is possible for the first time to take into account 20 countries of destination and to publish separate price indices for six destinations.
