- Abstract
Over the past 50 years, the world heritage enterprise has achieved remarkable achievements that have attracted global attention. However, there are still many challenges in nomination process, conservation practices, and theoretical research of world heritage. One of the main reasons is that the basic concept of the“outstanding universal value”(OUV), which underpins the theoretical foundation of world heritage, has not been scientifically and clearly defined. The objectives of the paper are as follows. 1) Adopting Marxist viewpoints and methods, we analyze and refute the notion that cultural heritage is conceived and fabricated, and decode the connotation of the objectivity of world cultural heritage values. 2) Based on Marx's labor theory of value, we analyze the value of cultural heritage as a “thing” or a product with labor embodied as a “masterpiece” of creation, which represents the crystallization of human wisdom in complex labor. 3) The OUV is defined based on the characteristics and connotation of the representation value. 4) Marx ' s philosophy is used as well to examine the truthfulness of the evaluation criteria for cultural heritage. In this study, we suggest that a new paradigm for scientific research on cultural heritage should be created to lift the world heritage research out of crisis by perfecting its selection and protection rules, and to uphold the OUV with the concept of scientific truth. We should be fully aware of the challenges and shared responsibilities for humankind as the custodian of the OUV of world heritage sites. This paper calls for the protection of heritage, not only itself but also its integrity and authenticity. From any impacts with a view to adhere to the OUV of the world heritage sites, it is striving to make the evaluation of the world cultural heritage nominated according to the selection criteria conform to the objective reality, ensuring that the cultural heritage selected for inclusion in the World Heritage List truly conforms to the criteria, and promoting the conservation of world heritage, with the aim of building an open, inclusive, adaptive, sustainable, resilient, clean and beautiful world for future generations.
