- Abstract
Background : This case report describes placement of a dental implant in a diabetic patient with controlled diabetes. The increased prevalence of diabetes mellitus has become a public health problem. Hyperglycemia entails a rise in the morbidity and mortality of these patients. Although a direct relationship with periodontal disease has already been shown, little is known about the results of dental implants in diabetics. Methods: after the hba1c levels were in desirable range, endo osseous implant, measuring 4.5mm in diameter and 11mm in length was inserted into the prepared osteotomy site. Final crown cementation was done with zirconia crown, 3months after the insertion of implant. Results : The atraumatic operating technique and the delayed insertion of the implant resulted in the preservation soft tissues at the extraction site with minimal resorption of the alveolar bone. The patient exhibited no clinical or radiographic complications through 12 months of clinical monitoring after loading. Conclusion: The delayed implant loading along with strict surgical protocols provided the patient with a desired dentition. The sequential surgical, technical, and restorative techniques were blended into one successful protocol, which was demonstrated with this clinical case report. Though diabetes is considered as a relative contraindication for implant placement, following strict surgical protocols along with a proper maintenance of glyated heamoglobin can lead to long standing successful treatment outcomes.
