- Abstract
Soft tissue enlargements of the oral cavity often present a diagnostic challenge because a diverse group of pathologic processes can produce such lesions. Within these lesions is a group of reactive hyperplasia, which develop in response to a chronic, recurring tissue injury that stimulates an exuberant or excessive tissue repair response and pyogenic granuloma is one of them. Pyogenic granuloma readily arises in response to various stimuli such as low grade local irritation, traumatic injury or hormonal factors. This case describes the clinical and histopathological features of a mucogingival pyogenic granuloma, in 4-year-old healthy male patient. This exophytic mass was related to chronic irritation, had more than twelve-month evolution on mandible involving lingual vestibule in relation to lower left deciduous canine and first deciduous molar. Conservative excisional surgery was performed, followed by uncomplicated healing with no recurrence in one year. The histopathological examination revealed lesion to be pyogenic granuloma describing clinical features, histopathologic features and differential diagnosis of the lesion.
