- Abstract
A recent survey found that calculus gives students an advantage in the college admissions process, with 93% of college counselors reporting its importance. However, critics argue that this may disadvantage students of color and low-income students. The Campaign for College Opportunity recommends eliminating arbitrary requirements and evaluating students' math course taking in context to increase equity in higher education. Additionally, a report from the National Working Group on Advanced Education suggests various strategies to develop the talents of high-ability students, particularly those from underrepresented groups. Parental involvement in schools has been shown to have positive effects on student achievement and social-emotional skills, regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomic status. Schools can encourage involvement through various means, such as creating a welcoming culture and providing resources for learning at home. The article also provides a list of educational websites for children. The US Supreme Court recently ended race-conscious admission programs at colleges and universities, and the College Board has introduced a new AP Precalculus course. Lastly, a report from the US Department of Education highlights the challenges of school segregation and offers solutions for desegregation.
