- Abstract
The consumption of substances in the adolescent population increases every year, decreasing more and more the age of beginning of the same one. In this order of ideas, it is important to build preventive strategies based on evidence, based on specific risk factors present in a target population. This study was aimed at identifying risk factors and protection against substance use in a sample of students from a rural school in the department of Antioquia, Colombia. Quantitative approach, descriptive level and non-experimental method were used, a Likert scale, designed for the present study, was applied to 470 students. At the general level of the sample was identified the presence of risk factors such as high social acceptance of consumption and availability of drugs in the social environment, high availability of drugs in the school environment and high family consumption of psychoactive substances, including legal substances. Likewise, were identified the protective factors such as high self-esteem, good self-control, low mood alterations, high school motivation, high support and family cohesion and low levels of conflict and family abuse. Also, the favorable attitude toward consumption obtained a low score, which means that this aspect acting such a protective factor in the general level of the sample.
