The article looks at court trials of assassins in 1843 in England and 1981 in the U.S. that forced changes in the insanity defense. Topics mentioned include murder trial of Daniel McNaughten on March 2, 1843, the 1838 book "A Treatise on the Medical Jurisprudence of Insanity," by physician Isaac Ray, and the trial and acquittal of John Hinckley, Jr. on March 30, 1981 by reason of insanity under the federal standard after shooting U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
