- Abstract
Complications in the form of diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) constitute a major epidemiological and medical problem. On a global scale, and likewise in Poland, one may indeed expect within the next few years an increasing number of patients with impaired glucose metabolism. Thus the prevalence of various diabetic foot symptoms is expected to steadily increase. Yet, solely an early appropriate and multi-specialist treatment is able to stop the progression of the illness and reduce the necessity for a lower limb amputation. One of modern and, importantly, effective treatments is negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT),The application of a system of negative-pressure dressings reduces the percentage of performed major amputations. This paper presents an effective prevention of amputations above the talocrural region achieved by means of the application of negative-pressure wound therapy. The current state of knowledge highly recommends this manner of wound dressing in patients with diabetic foot syndrome,
