- Abstract
We present a study about eclipses and a pre-college educational activity about projection methods for safe observation of the Sun. This paper comprises historical information regarding solar and lunar eclipses, along with concepts of space weather. Eclipses are extremely beautiful astronomical phenomena that capture attention of individuals at all ages. For this reason, it is important to promote awareness of risks associated with direct eye exposure to solar radiation and to present methods for their safe observation. The incautious observation of the Sun can lead to severe visual damage, including total visual impairment. Considering that the incidence of eye injury increases during solar eclipses, different observation methods have been investigated in terms of risks, advantages and disadvantages. We conclude that projection methods are the best overall for the Sun safe observation. It is presented three low-cost and easy-to-assemble projection apparatus. They allow safe solar eclipse observation, thus contributing to capture students' interest towards space sciences and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in general.
