- Abstract
The article discusses the 2nd century apocryphal book "Acts of Paul and Thecla" in relation to the historical context of the Roman empire and the early Christian church. It describes the popularity of the book in churches throughout Asia Minor, the veneration of Thecla as a saint, and the book's understanding of the role of women in ministry. The Christian understanding of martyrdom is discussed, along with the use of the book by early church fathers Gregory of Nyssa, Tertullian, and Jerome. Other subjects under discussion include early church conceptions of monasticism, 2nd century marriage practices, and the celebration of the virtue of chastity.
