- Abstract
The article discusses the social and political relationship between Galicians and Central Ukrainians during the early 20th century. According to the author, repression in Russian-administered Ukraine caused Galicia to be the site where Ukrainian literary and political thought was most widely published and discussed. Details on the Ukrainian national movement are presented. It is suggested that central Ukrainians who were political refugees or prisoners of war often became supporters of a free Ukrainian state through the influence of political thought in Galicia. Poet Ivan Franko and author Taras Shevchenko are also discussed.
