- Abstract
The article looks at the efforts in New Mexico to guarantee American Indian students sufficient educational opportunity. It explores the political, cultural, educational and legal underpinnings leading to the case Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico. It examines the history of forced assimilation of American Indians in education and the impact of systemic discrimination of such students in New Mexico. State and federal laws pertaining to the education of American Indians are also discussed.
