Familiar Patterns: Hmong and Mennonite Quiltmakers in Lancaster County.
- Authors
Gibson, Heather
- Abstract
The article discusses a study which explored Mennonite and Hmong quiltmaking partnerships in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The author says the quilts reflect the cultural history of the Hmong and Mennonite quiltmakers and complement the women's lifestyle. The quilting business in the country involves a range of individuals. Quilts became popular from the beginnings of affordable fabrics and the availability of printed materials. Public interest in quilts was inspired by the wealth of literature on homesteading and folk art. One of the factors that contributed to the area's quilt businesses was the sewing skills of the Hmong.
