Irradiated Diamond: An Easy Call.
- Authors
Koivula, John I.; Dale, Laura L.
- Abstract
The article presents the result of an examination of 4.06-cut dark orange-brown, marquise-shaped brilliant stone, which was submitted for origin-of-color determination. Under a microscope, the orange-brown color of this type IIa diamond was concentrated along the pavilion facet junctions and around the culet. Based on a study by J. I. Koivula, while bombardment of a diamond in a cyclotron generally produces an olive green color, the color changes to an orange-brown when heated in air to 590-620°C. It is reiterated that a stone can be quickly ascertained using microscope.
