- Authors

- Abstract
The article focuses on a preliminary study of the effect of treating Canary tourmaline at higher temperatures. A Nabertherm furnace was used to heat a faceted brownish yellow sample to 700° Celsius (C) for 20 hours in air, which turned to brownish red after the process. Such color was attributed to the oxidation of manganese (Mn)2+ to Mn3+. Also noted were the distinct changes in color and appearance of two slabs of yellow-green tourmaline heated for 7 days at 700°C or for 5 days at 750°C.
