Historic U.S. sapphire and benitoite mines close.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article concerns the closure of the historic U.S. sapphire and benitoite mines in Yogo Gulch, Montana in late November 2004. According to Peter Ecker of Yogo Creek Mining, the sapphire ore had become much less friable at depth, which made both the extraction and processing of the ore less economic. It was noted that the thickness of the lateral dike formation being mined had pinched considerably, while most of the surface workings have been reclaimed. The remaining sapphire inventory has been sold to Adair Jewelers in Missoula, Montana. In addition, the mining company permanently closed and reclaimed the Benitoite Gem mine in San Benito County, California in June 2005.
