- Abstract
The article presents a case study of a nurse-driven insulin protocol implemented in a surgical intensive care unit. The randomized trials studied the continuous insulin infusion protocol which showed the benefits of intensive insulin therapy among critically ill hospitalized patients. It was found to lower mortality without increasing morbidity secondary to hypoglycemia. Furthermore, the protocol achieved timely initiation of insulin infusion and a preferred glycemic control of the patients.
