- Title
Democracy or Epismocracy?
- Authors
CANTOR, PAUL; SPARKS, ROGER
- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of democracy and the potential challenges it faces. It explores the idea that a government elected by the people may be susceptible to rule by populists who consolidate their own power. The article suggests that a solution to this problem could be the implementation of an "epistocracy," where political power is distributed based on knowledge and competence. The authors propose a four-part written exam for presidential candidates to assess their cognitive ability, knowledge, stance on major issues, and ethical decision-making. They argue that providing voters with reliable information about candidates' qualifications is crucial for a well-functioning democracy. The article also emphasizes the importance of education in promoting a socially conscious electorate.
