The article discusses research on the efficacy of lithium in treating patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and preventing recurrence of mania compared to placebo. The study identifies clinical factors that predicted positive response to lithium including fewer hospitalizations, episodic course of mania, depression and euthymia and a later age at onset of BD. A list of probable and possible positive and negative predictors for therapeutic response to lithium in patients with BD is presented.
