- Abstract
The article reports on the confirmation that pre-industrial whale tissue contains compounds formerly thought to be produced only by industrial operations. Researchers found halogenated organic compounds (HOC) that is similar to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), currently banned pesticide, in whale oil stored since 1921. When the researchers decided to look at the archived marine tissue samples for clues, they tracked down stored whale oil from the last whaling ships to sail named "Charles W Morgan." They discovered 11 HOCs from the unique sample stored at the New Bedford Whaling Museum and found no traces of the recent pesticide DDT or its breakdown products.
