- Title
PRESERVATION PERSPECTIVES: BOOK HANDLING.
- Authors
Palmer, Suzy Szasz
- Abstract
The article provides information to preserve books by right care and handling. Along with some general care like keeping books away from elements like water, eatables and dirt there is a need for right handling of books. Smooth metal shelves should be used for keeping books. Books should be shelved upright, snug but not too tight and secure with bookends of the right height for the books. When preparing books for re-shelving on a book truck items of similar size can be kept together. This helps prevent warping of books over time and also helps secure them while moving a book truck. Apart from shelving guidelines the article advices that books should be handled carefully while being read. No marks with pens, pencils or highlighters should be used, since all three will erode the paper over the time. When taking notes near books, it's safest to use a pencil, since an accidental pencil mark in the book can be more easily removed than ink. Also it suggests that only paper bookmarks should be used.
