- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses how the number of "a" and "an" in English plays determines progressive changes in early modern English drama. Based on 190 plays from 1580s to 1630s, the median count of "a" and "an" was found to increase in each decade. Comedies were found to have the highest frequencies of "a" and "an." It states that "a" and "an" imply a degree of detachment, abstraction, and generalization which allow for a precise and rich structure of reference.
