- Abstract
Cooperating teacher and student teacher perceptions of their preferred and actual school teaching/learning environments were assessed with the School-Level Environment Questionnaire (SLEQ). Use of a matched-pair design allowed researchers to compare each cooperating teacher's responses to those of his or her particular student teacher. Results indicated that both cooperating teacher and student teacher scores on the preferred form of the SLEQ were significantly more favorable than their scores on the actual form of the SLEQ for all scales except Staff Freedom. Paired t-tests revealed general agreement between cooperating teachers and student teachers regarding what constitutes a preferred teaching/learning environment, with the exception of Student Support and Participatory Decision Making, but statistically significant differences were found between cooperating teachers and student teachers on five of the eight scales of the SLEQ's actual form. There were patterns in the means for the four forms (i.e. cooperating teacher preferred, student teacher preferred, cooperating teacher actual, and student teacher actual). Results of the study are compared to those of a similar study in 1994. In addition, implications for reflection and mentoring opportunities for preservice and inservice professional development programs are discussed.
