- Abstract
In the 1780s the Bourbon government enacted several measures in Sicily impacting the large family estates in the kingdom. Their purpose was to encourage the formation of smaller properties and the development of the island's real wealth: agriculture. One of the most important initiatives of the viceroy Caracciolo aimed at limiting feudal constraints and the set of oppressive legal prohibitions imposed according to custom by barons, which in the eighteenth century constituted a surviving form of ancient serfdom. Starting with laws regulating the exercise of baronial power, a harsh attack on feudal power in the countryside began, and it gave rise to a debate in which baronial propaganda was quite active. A process of seamless transformation had begun, and the Constitution of 1812 represented both the fusion of and the compromise between old and new.
