- Abstract
What grouped all the themes researched by the historian Robert Chester Smith was the study of the cities, that is to say, all the artistic manifestations studied by him were eminently urban. Smith dealt with the aesthetic and artistic aspects perceived in the churches, streets, houses, paintings and sculptures of the colonial period. An urban scenario understood as a place of conflict, disputes, discussion and construction of aesthetic, patrimonial and artistic parameters and a field of research in formation. Smith entered the Brazilian intellectual field in 1937, the year of his first trip to Brazil. However, from the beginning of his training he sought to integrate and strengthen the field of studies on colonial art and architecture, specifically Portuguese-Brazilian. Therefore, the article deals with the formation of the field of studies on art and colonial architecture from the intellectual trajectory of Robert Chester Smith.
